IV Highlights Winter - Week 9
I have been following along with the 29 Ways to Pray Campaign that our region is doing (see below for more info). It has been very challenging, but it has caused me to flex my prayer muscles a bit and I think we could all use a little more of that, especially now that school is eating up more and more of our time. Often the first thing I cut back on is time with God :( This has definitely helped stop me from doing that, and I encourage you to try it out!

Prayer!
For the Month of February, InterVarsity as a region will be praying for a new cause every day. The topics of prayer for the day will be posted on our Facebook page as well as on: http://nycurbanproject.com/ Please join us as well pray! We will still be holding our regular prayer events below:

Campus Prayer
  When: Wednesday @ 9:00am till 10:00am Place: Java's

Fight Club
     When: Sunday @ 8:30pm Place: Colony 109

After Eight
  When: Sunday @ 8:30pm Place: Perkins 193A

National Collegiate Day of Prayer
When: Thursday, February 23rd (Thursday of week 10)
We will be partnering with some other Christian clubs on campus to spend the day in prayer. People all over the country will be praying for college students! For more information and to sign up to pray, go here

Follow Up Training (Free Pizza!)
This year we're doing a Spring New Student Outreach (NSO)! There will be a training event for people interested in helping with Spring NSO on Friday @ 6pm outside Webb auditorium. Free pizza for anyone who wants to attend.

Large Group
When: Friday @ 7pm Webb Auditorium (07 - 1350)
Topic: "Hormonal Women and Emotionally Stunted Men"
Come here about what makes the other sex tick. I know I'll be taking notes.

Testimony
I was someone who grew up in the Church and had access to vacation Bible school, youth group, etc. But slowly I started to fall off the bandwagon and when I got to college it was a free pass for me to do whatever I wanted. But college has been a really difficult time for me.These past two years have been the worst. My dad's Alzheimers progressed and my mom was diagnosed with stage IV metastasized bone cancer. It felt like God took away my parents away from me. Yes, they were still here but my relationship with them couldn't be the same.

I completely fell apart with school being the only thing I could really focus on or care about. My relationships with everyone I knew started deteriorating and I just felt depressed. My mom is a Christian and I know she always prays for me. I feel like I am a product of that prayer. With the encouragement of one of my best friends I started to read Philippians and found some comfort in that. I haven't stopped seeking God since then and my life has become so much better! I have a peace that I haven't had in years. I still have some anxiety and get down on myself for some of my past decisions but I look forward to God healing my heart.

Human Trafficking Awareness Week!

IV Highlights Winter - Week 8
This quarter is absolutely flying. We are reaching that part of the quarter where it is easy to retreat into our own little worlds and just "get things done". While sometimes this is necessary, God doesn't live in his own little world. Thing about what that means for you these next few weeks

Testimony
I have a very close relationship with a friend who is struggling with a difficult situation. She's made and continues to make some choices that I do not agree with, and although I don't have to agree with them, they're also choices that are not pleasing to God. God has definitely been nudging me to talk to her about some of these difficult things. Out of fear of loosing her as a friend, I didn't listen, and let things be. Finally, I decided to listen to God and talk to her, gently. And you know what? I didn't lose her, not at all. If anything it has brought us closer together! And now we can openly talk about these situations honestly. I can share my concerns, and she knows that I am just caring for and loving her. My lesson from this: Listen to God, even when you're terrified!!!

RIT InterVarsity - Basileia 2012 Announcement

Sorry to break the one e-mail a week rule, but we are announce that Basileia registration has opened!

Here are the vital details -

Dates: Saturday May 26 to Thursday May 31 (Week 3)
Location: Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks

We will carpool from RIT

Cost: Students are asked to pay $215 of the total cost of $365

Registration: students should register themselves on the Basileia website. Deadline is May 6 (after that price goes up)

IV Highlights Winter - Week 7
There seems to be a general air of uncertainty right now. People don't know whether they will be on co-op or taking classes next quarter. The weather is different every time you check it. People are uncertain about what the future holds. It's at times like this that I take great comfort in knowing that God is always constant and that He's there no matter what :^)

Come find out what Intervarsity is and how you can be involved! Hear presentations about what the separate teams that make up InterVarsity do for our Community and our Campus.

Testimony
Two weeks ago, I started a fast with my church. Every year we do a church-wide fast in January to center our focus on God and allow Him to lead us in the coming year. I admit I was pretty skeptical that anything would happen or change in me, that I would learn anything, or that God would speak to me during the fast.... But it did. He really did! I don't have words to describe how transforming and absolutely amazing these past two weeks have been.
It started last Friday night after Large Group on my way home - I literally started crying in the car-crying out to God. I told Him that I had been "faking" my faith for, well...a really long time. I was "faking it" to get people to accept me, to love me, to like me. I was doing it for all the wrong reasons, and I finally admitted it to myself, and to God.
That night in the car, I asked God for a personal relationship with Him, for Him to lead me, guide me, teach me, and love me. I have never felt so alive and so free as I did in that moment. That was "the moment" I was finally saved - when I finally let God into my life with no reservations.
Since that night, my life has truly been changed. I know that people say that a lot, and it can start to sound cliche, but trust me when I say it - my life has been changed. I have felt God's presence more than ever. I've been excited to read my bible and my devotionals; I've been excited to pray. All of these things used to seem dull to me, but now they are anything but. I truly look forward to reading, and I pray all the time...
God is truly present in my life, as he always was. But now I am actually aware of his presence - his love. This past Saturday night at church, God spoke to me through a vision. What I saw was scary. It didn't fit into the perfect picture I had envisioned for myself, and definitely nothing I wanted. But when I thought about it some more, all the fear disappeared and I was excited! Yes, this is going to be hard, but what God has planned will be blessed.

This experience of fasting has been one of, if not the most influential times in my life. Praise God for his faithfulness and his grace. God is loving, compassionate, kind, relational, and forgiving and loving. I am forever changed. Thanks be to God.

Must Read: Retreat Update and Rides!

Hey y'all! For those of you who are going on the retreat, we are leaving this Friday, Feb 3.

Transportation

Friday: Rides for U of R and Eastman will be at 3:30 PM at ITS. RIT students are to meet at 3 at Sol Circle.

I've attached a file with all the vans/drivers. Please take a look and make sure you go on the van corresponding to your name on the list.

For those of you who have class or can't make the time, please contact Grace Chai (grace.chai@gmail.com) and she will set up rides for you so you aren't left here in Rochester!

Things to Bring:

Start packing now!

-Very warm clothes! The weather is supposed to be in the teens! (while all of the rooms are heated, we do walk a little outside).
-toiletries and shower products

-notebook, pen, and bible
-any medications you may take (please, when we say it's in the middle of nowhere...)
-warm blanket and pillow
-sleeping bag if you have one
-homework if you need to study - we will give you a large block of time on Saturday afternoon to study!!!

-Please no electronic gadgets (headsets, video games etc)
-an open heart for the Lord to work in!

Regular Sunday Service

For those of you who are not going on the retreat, there will be regular Sunday Service (and remember no Friday Large Group).

When: Rides leave ITS and Eastman Dorms at 8:45 AM. RIT drivers will provide their own rides at Sol Circle.

Wow this quarter has really been going fast! Break feels like yesterday. While everything seems to be flying by I'm trying to find time each day to slow down and focus on God, otherwise I get lost in it all.

Testimony
For the New Year I made a resolution, I started a reading plan to read the Bible in it's entirety this year, cover to cover. I'm writing this on January 22nd, so that's 22 days I've been doing this. It is something that has been suggested to me before, but never properly communicated to me. Honestly, it always has frustrated me when someone says, "You should read the whole Bible! It's awesome!" In IV, we are encouraged NOT to say that, to give it more detail, to really get at what you want to say, what God did. So let me expand what I would say to you now: I've started reading the entire Bible, and it's awesome.

I've missed a few days in those 22. A day without it is different. It is a sinful day. Let me be clear, I find myself clearly and unequivocally in a worse position as a Christian on the days I don't read God's word. I am more susceptible to sin without it. The days I do read, are like day as the aforementioned is night. My mind, body and soul are focused on what they need to be focused on. I have what I need to defend myself against the Evil One - the Word of God, as Christ did in the Wilderness. My confession to you is that in many ways I do not like this dependency. I have a strong desire to be independent. I have been talking with Mark Weber about it, and I am coming to thrive on this fact that the "Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold." ~ Psalm 18:2. There is no need to fear my dependency, God IS, God is the ROCK, always and forever.

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a good and restful winter break!

So who's ready for spring semester? We have a lot of great events planned for you guys this semester so please stay tuned for more information.

Fun Filled Friday (1/20)

Activities Fair (U of R): We need some volunteers to help man the table. Come spread the gospel

When: 3 PM

Where: Zornow (Basketball) Courts of the Athletic Center

Large Group: There will be a guest speaker at RIT this friday.

When: 7:30 PM; Rides are at 7 at U of R and Eastman

Where: RIT in Room 8-1250 (the "big" room)

After Large Group, we are going to go ICE SKATING at GVP!! Please wear warm socks and clothes.

U of R students has a discount of $3. The regular price is $8. Join us for an awesome night of fellowship and race around the rink.

Sunday (1/22): Sunday Service

Sunday worship at RKUMC. Join us for a time of worship. We serve BAGELS (the good kind) afterwards, so come eat bagels and stay for fellowship!

Where: RKUMC

When: Rides leave ITS and Eastman Dorms at 8:45 AM. RIT drivers will provide their own rides.

The last day to sign up for the retreat is on 1/29/12.
$The Dineros$: $75

Paintball $$: Sometime this semester, we have planned a paintball event! For those of you who signed up, please make sure to pay back the person. The cost is $10

RIT InterVarsity - ATTENTION ALL NONGRADUATING CHAPTER MEMBERS

InterVarsity's 2012 Nomination Committee is in full swing.

It's their job to select servant team leaders, small group leaders, and other leadership positions for the 2012-13 school year.

If you are interested in being on leadership for InterVarsity next year, please CLICK HERE and fill out the involvement questionaire so that the nomination committee sees how you would like to more involved in the chapter next year.

But what if I don't want to be on leadership, should I still fill it out?

Glad you asked! Even if you are not interested in being in having a specific leadership position, filling out the involvement questionnaire will help the nomination committee express your desire to be involved in other ways.

Please fill out the questionnaire by Sunday, January 22. Decisions wont be announced until sometime in the middle of spring quarter.

The Women's Ministry is holding a study break at the U of R for all you hard-working students!

This is a really good opportunity to relax those brain cells and enjoy some peace during finals week. There will be music, snacks, cookies, delicious taquitos and salsa, and refreshments. There are also some fun activities planned out--so come and hang out with other students and relieve some stress!

I hope everybody is adapting back to school life after break. This 3 week period is definitely weird, but we are almost half way through so hang in there! I'm just trying to take advantage of my extra free time by looking for where is God is at work and trying to help in any way I can.

Small groups have been thriving this year, so this quarter we've added TWO NEW ones! Culinary and Runners small groups now give us a total of 8 small groups! Testimony
This is my story: nothing held back, nothing concealed, nothing censored. My life is an open book.
It all started one morning when I woke up and my head started shaking. I didn't know what was happening. I was worried, my parents were worried, my teachers were worried, my friends were worried, but others bullied me. My parents took me to our family doctor who told my parents that I was doing it for attention. I promise I was not doing it for attention; if your head shook like that for even a few minutes you would realize how much energy it takes and how much you hurt. After that I went to the local neurologist. During the appointment he told me that I was doing it for attention. I knew I was not doing it for attention, but as time went on, the bullying became worse and the words the doctors said began to sink in. I began thinking that they are professionals, who am I to say they are wrong, if they said I was doing it for attention then they must be right. I believed it; I believed I was doing it for attention. I was starting to think I was the worse person on earth, putting my parents through all this, everyone at school hated me and everyone would be better without me.
I specifically remember two nights: One was after wrestling practice I arrived home and I was in the shower. I was extremely depressed that night and I remember looking to my side and I see a razor blade. I picked it up and slowly and carefully dragged it across my forearm, not enough to draw blood but to think "should I do this?" I don't know what stopped me that night but I thank God it did. The other one started in school. Because of my head movements I was physically unable to read and I failed my English class. Back then my grades were everything to me and I was dropping from a straight A+ student to someone who just failed a class. As soon as I received that grade I started making a plan to kill myself that night. I was going to take a bottle of pills (and I knew what would kill me and what wouldn't) and walk behind the apartments and drown myself in the creek. To this day I still remember exactly where in the creek I was going to do it. My parents picked me up from school that night and I broke down in tears and told them everything. They took me to the emergency room and I was transferred to a mental hospital where I stayed for one week. When I left I wasn't better, they prescribed me medicine and all it did was make me feel worse and more depressed. I had other plans but none as vibrant as that night. I know for sure if I arrived home I would have ended it that night.
I continued to have the depressing thoughts and the suicidal plans until the day my parents brought me to HT. That morning I was born again. At the time I didn't fully understand what was going on but I felt happy, I felt joyful. Before that I hadn't felt joy for more than a year, I was always either depressed or just numb. That moment my entire life turned around. But it didn't stop there. By that time my tics had changed from my head and neck to my hands and arms. I was in church one morning and I noticed the sign language ministry so I decided to try and imitate the signing and I realized that I had control. I hadn't had control for a long time. So I continued learning and I actually became the leader of the sign language ministry. And it didn't end there. He has blessed me so many times that I cannot even list them here. All I can say is that without Him, I am sure, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I would have ended my life.

Just a reminder that there is NO ACF LARGE GROUP this Friday. Enjoy Thanksgiving Break wherever you are! Eat turkey and enjoy friends and family!

We will be selling pies at church tomorrow (Nov.13th). We have pumpkin pies, apple pies, and pecan pies. We also have some peanut butter fingers and whoopies. We purchased them from the Amish bakery and they are some delicious pies. Bring your cash if you would like to buy any. It is $2 per slice, $10 for the whole pie. All the money will be donated to LiNK, to help the North Korean refugees and to raise awareness about the North Korea Crisis.

RIT InterVarsity - Highlights Fall Week 10

IV Highlights Fall - Week 10
Short and sweet this week. Keep working hard on all those projects and papers. I'm just trying to do work that is worthy of the talents and abilities God has given me.

Dimitri House
Tonight is the first night we are sending people to Dimitri house! Dimitri House is a shelter for homeless men in downtown Rochester. It is an awesome opportunity to serve those less fortunate then us and show them God's love. Responsibilities include arriving at the house at 8:45pm and you will be leaving around 7:30am the next morning after cooking breakfast and cleaning stuff up.

Testimony
From the first moment I walked into Women's Prayer, I felt comfortable. Everyone was so nice to me, and I knew that I was accepted. I could tell this group of women anything, and rely on their support. It was wonderful to feel so welcomed even though I did not know anyone at all. I love how prayer brings people together, and I love that we can talk to God any way we want-- alone, in a group, out loud, or in your head.

Looking for volunteer and community outreach opportunities?

The Crisis Nursery of Greater Rochester is looking for new volunteers to help with child care. The Nursery is a non-for-profit organization that provides short-term childcare when families find themselves in times of crisis, at no cost. They care for children from birth to twelve years old. Volunteers help assist staff with childcare during 2-4 hour shifts. If you are interested in helping at the Nursery, please contact Emily Pape: epape@u.rochester.edu

So there was a slight error in the announcements. This Friday, Large Group will be in Gowen Room at 7:30pm and rides will leave RIT SOL Circle at 7:00pm. I wasn't 100% clear about that, sorry sorry.

Amy has decided to make an extension for the ACF Book to the end of November! Again, she's asking for entries of any size, format, type (song, text, tumblr, picture) about something God has done in your life. This is a great way to encourage your brothers, sisters and alumni and it can be totally anonymous. With the extension, you can now work on it over Thanksgiving break! Testimony
God has really been convicting me of my attitude about prayer recently. I usually approach prayer as a dull, boring thing. I don't expect that God will answer my prayers, concerns or questions. And when I do that, well what do you know, that's what it turns out to be. This weekend at Expedition I asked God a question I fully expected Him to answer. And he did! It was awesome. If we don't expect God to answer us, why do we bother to pray? It seems really silly looking back, but it was a pattern that I repeated for a long time. I'm glad that the pattern was broken and I cannot wait for the amazing things that God is going to do next. My eyes has definitely been opened to the power of prayer.

Testimony
I had been going through what I call a "faith crisis" for a few weeks...until last Thursday. These feelings had been building for a while, but with the stress of projects and my other obligations, I broke down and everything fell apart. I met my boyfriend at Jay's diner at 11pm to talk, and for the first time, I admitted what I was feeling. My feelings of insecurity, loneliness, fear, being forgotten and overall a lack of faith. God felt so distant. I remember asking, 'does He even exist?'. In that moment I couldn't remember ever truly feeling God's presence in my life. I was confused at how to know what God was speaking to me. How do you know? It's not like He's standing right next to me in person. Everything just felt so hard, and so heavy. Everything felt like an obligation. I was just ultimately losing my faith in God. I knew the truths about God. The problem was in believing. I just didn't know how to take the next step and BELIEVE. When I left the diner, my boyfriend told me I wasn't allowed to cry anymore so I could get home safely. But when I got in the car, the very first song that was playing on KLOVE was "I Shall Believe" by Matt Brouwer. If my eyes were dry when I got in the car, they certainly were not anymore. I almost had to pull over because I couldn't see. That moment, I learned how to believe. God spoke to me so directly in that moment, I couldn't do anything else. I believe.

It has been quite a busy week! Hopefully life is treating everyone well. It's hard to believe that registration starts next week. I hope that we will continue to be faithful with the gifts that God has given, just as he has been faithful to us!

   This is the third talk in the faith decisions series. This should be a very interesting talk!

Testimony
God can always be counted on. Did I say that before? Here I am going through the month, money is just barely going to last me until my first paycheck and then my bank card stops working. I managed to get it all scratched up in my wallet. I go to the bank to deal with it and the lady at the counter says, "Okay, that'll be 20€." ... "Okay," said I, "hold that thought, I don't have 20€ this second." So I go home in a rather stressed way inwardly, and get to counting all my loose change and doing a little math. If I'm super careful, I could possibly make it to next friday when my paycheck comes, but who knows, it'll be close. Then I remembered that Monday being a holiday, everything would be closed, including the bakery where I get some free food on Mondays for the week... Eating will be even a bigger challenge. I think God tried to remind me that he was God and could handle it that evening when I was so stressed, but he said it in German and it didn't really sink in. So I decide I can just maybe kind of afford the card, which I need actually to collect money when it does come so I can pay for my visa on next Monday. Well I get to the bank all ready to buy a new card, and what should I find, but it's a different lady who gives me a card for free, along with a case that will protect my card from future scratches! With an extra 20€ in hand, I can undoubtedly make it through the week. God has yet to leave me hanging. Maybe I'll start trusting him soon.

This is Amy Kim, and I just wanted to let you know about a project that I am embarking on, which is to put together a book of stories, writings, and drawings of Christians at U of R, RIT, and Eastman (the alumni and the YAF members included). I believe that testimonies have a great power to impact lives and I have often been touched and encouraged by the stories of other Christians during my difficult times. I am planning on collecting all the entries by the end of October and have the books by Thanksgiving to share with you guys. You can submit anything you want. It can be a poem, song, art work, or a story of an incident when you were touched by God, or the way that God impacted your life. Hello everyone,

There has been some confusion surrounding Expedition deadlines for registration,

payment, etc.

Here are some points to help clear things up, all this information is also available at

www.rit.edu/ivcf/expedition.

The deadline to REGISTER is Friday, October 7th. Payment is NOT necessarily needed at the time of registration.
If you register after this date, the cost will jump to $150.
All PAYMENT is needed by Tuesday, October 18th. This can be in the form of a check, cash, or online. See the above link or contact Andrea if you have questions.

Testimony

When I first started going to After Eight, I have to admit that I didn't really get it. I didn't understand why people were telling me it was so important, and honestly, I didn't really understand the point of group prayer. It always seemed forced and rehearsed to me, and well, kinda boring. But after I started going for a few weeks, I began to understand why I was there. This group of girls is more than just a group that get together to pray. After Eight is a group that genuinely cares for one another. It's a place where we can feel comfortable to share very intimate concerns and praises, and know that they will be taken seriously, lovingly, and prayed over diligently. Not only do we pray for each other, but we pray for those around us and on our campus. Because of After Eight, I have a better understanding of the power and importance of prayer, and what it means to love as God loves. Since I have started going, I have seen numerous prayers answered in the lives of the members, "outsiders" we prayed for, and my own life. Now I try to do everything I can not to miss our Sunday prayer!

Just a quick update. This Saturday ACF will be going Apple Picking. We will leave UR ITS and RIT SOL Circle at NOON and return to the respective campuses by 4:00pm. Please bring about $10 in order to cover the fun stuff (bouncing pillow!). $10 is more than enough for the fun, but bring extra if you want to purchase food or apples. I also highly suggest you eat lunch before you go and use your meal plan instead of eating there. We will be going to Brownsberry Patch <http://brownsberrypatch.com>

Testimony
One of my goals since I started at RIT was to become more comfortable with my faith around non-Christians. I typically felt awkward and judged to talk about my faith to others in high school. This fear continued into college until I joined IV. I got involved with IV small groups in the winter on my freshman year and by spring was attending large group every week. I loved all the support that I received from my new friends in those two quarters that I came back my 2nd year wanting to be more involved with IV. I was asked to join Leadership Team my 2nd year and gained skills, confidence and support. As I became more confident in my faith, I began to see my talking more and more about God to people outside of IV. I would engage in conversations at dance rehearsals, or on a bus back from a regatta with my teammates or 1 on 1 with my coach! Now in my 3rd year I have a strong sense of pride and joy telling people about what I believe. At one of the NSO BBQ's, I stood out on the quarter mile shouting, "FREE BURGERS!!" and had the best time knowing that I was serving the Lord and the students of RIT. This is possible due to the wonderful amount of love and support that I have from my IV family. I am now more excited than ever to give back to IV and reach out to more students at RIT.
